machico madeira

Located on the east coast of Madeira Island, approximately 22 km from Funchal, this municipality has a great historical significance.

It was here that Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira disembarked, in 1419, when they discovered Madeira.
Machico became town on 2nd August 1996 and has about 20,000 inhabitants distributed among its 68 km2.
Legend has it that already a century before this discovery, Robert Machim and Anna d’Arfet had found refuge here. The distortion of the name Machim resulted in the name of this city.
The bay of Machico invites for a walk amidst the amazing view over sea and land. To the east of the Machico valley is the Pico de Facho Belvedere, from where you can admire the panoramic views from the peaks of the central area of the island up to the Ponta de São Lourenço.
The Banda Além beach, in the bay of Machico, is about 125 meters long and 70 meters wide. This beach is distinguished for its yellow sand, imported from Morocco.

Five parishes make up this municipality: Água de Pena, Caniçal, Machico, Porto da Cruz and Santo António da Serra.

Água de Pena Parish

The parish of Água de Pena, located on the south coast of Madeira, belongs to the Municipality of Machico, and is distant about 20 km from Funchal.
Located downhill from the mountains to the sea, this location frees itself from the plateau, where the poles support the green crops, and serenity is sought in the ravines that connect the ocean.
This town has the Francisco Alvares Nobrega Belvedere, from where one can glimpse an amazing view over the valley and bay of Machico, Caniçal and Ponta de São Lourenço.
In this parish one finds the Água de Pena Sports Park, a building that had as main objective the creation of an extensive recreational and sports area primarily designed for sports but also with a more multipurpose side, linked to leisure and for all ages. This park is open to the public, and expands under the platform from the Madeira Airport. Here, there are more than a dozen multi-purpose fields, which includes a sand field for beach football and volleyball.

Caniçal Parish

It is said that its name comes from the existence of a plant whose name is caniço (reed) or carriço (sedge). Situated on the widest part of a peninsula in the far east of the island of Madeira, between Machico and São Lourenço, Caniçal received the title of town in 1994.
It is the parish in Madeira with the longest coastline with numerous boulders and cliffs that overlook the sea, as well as many pebbles both on the north and south coast. Here, one finds the only natural golden sand beach on the island of Madeira and the Madeira Free Zone.
The Whale Museum of Madeira is located in the village of Caniçal and is a witness to the entire history of whaling in Madeira and the activities associated with it. This museum has been developing over the past few years, studies of cetaceans in the Madeira archipelago. You can find more information about the projects in which the museum is involved in “Scientific Projects”.
On the far east of Caniçal is Ponta de São Lourenço, which is characterized by several rock formations with hues ranging from red to black, and small islets. Walks in Ponta de São Lourenço offer stunning views of both the north and south coasts of the island, and also of the Deserted islands and Porto Santo.

Porto da Cruz Parish

The parish of Porto da Cruz is located 36 km from Funchal, on the north coast of the island. Porto da Cruz is a civil parish since 1677, and in 1996 was became town.
The mountains surrounding the town cast an amphitheater facing the sea. From a geological point of view, Porto da Cruz is a true exhibition of splendid formations such as the consecutive layers of volcanic ash or basalt formations. Connected for long to the exploitation of land, Porto da Cruz has a largely rural and agricultural landscape. The devices found here witness the dynamics that sugar added to the local economy.
In Porto da Cruz, one can find Penha d’Águia, an imposing and iconic seaside cliff in the shape of a truncated pyramid, 590m tall. You can climb this cliff through a path in Sítio da Cruz and enjoy the fantastic scenery that this location provides.
Praia da Lagoa of Porto da Cruz is probably the best sandy beach of the north. The name of the parish is dedicated to Santo António, its patron saint, but is traditionally known as “Santo da Serra”.
