Madeira – Vereda and Levada Walks are one of the almost mandatory experience in Madeira.
Scattered throughout the island, there are more than 3000kms of levadas, distributed in more than 200 routes, which take you through some of the most beautiful landscapes of Madeira.
Walking in veredas and levadas is one of the most popular outdoor activities in Madeira, not only by residents, but also visitors, as it allows the access to the interior of the island; and throughout the year, thanks to the environmental and climatic conditions.
Walk through a pedestrian path is experiencing a true symbiosis between man and nature through the routes that run through valleys and mountains, and going almost from the sea to the highest peaks of the island.
The levadas are watercourses created by man over several centuries, in order to carry water from springs and rivers for agricultural and drier areas. These are incredible engineering works, as are hundreds of kilometers on the slopes of the rocks in cliffs hundreds of meters high, with a minimum gap, allowing water to flow serenely.
Some trails are identified as “Recommended routes – PR”. These are the ones that offer more security, have more maintenance and are more marked. You can meet them all here on our website.
