The Pico do Arieiro is the third highest peak of Madeira. It has 1818m of altitude, just after the Pico Ruivo with 1861m and Pico das Torres with 1851m.

Pico do Arieiro is located in the hills of Funchal, and is a must visit attraction, as it allows you to have a view over much of the island and Porto Santo (if the weather allows it).
Here you can see from the east end, the tip of São Lourenço, to the Paul da Serra and the mountains of São Vicente. You can also see the Curral das Freiras, on the valley floor.
It is easily accessible by car, and the journey from the centre of Funchal takes about half an hour,  Expected to rise toward the Monte, always following after spending this beautiful parish, to the Poiso, where you should turn left towards the Chão da Lagoa and Pico do Areeiro.

It is in the Pico do Arieiro that begins one of the most spectacular walking routes (PR1 – Vereda do Arieiro), which goes to the Pico Ruivo. This route has a length of about 7km, through cliffs, steep slopes and some tunnels. During the course, you will be able to observe several types of realities, from wild vegetation, arid and rocky scenery, at high altitudes, as well as overworked landscapes in the lower elevations, as in locations that can catch sight. It is advisable to take some precautions, including the use of lanterns and clothing and appropriate footwear.
Here you will find a cafe/restaurant and souvenir shops.

During the winter it is possible to happen to snowfall and hail, both at the Pico Arieiro, as in the surrounding areas.

On the way up to Pico do Areeiro, you will see a building, similar to an igloo, known as “snow well”. This was built by an English family in order to store ice and snow in the mountains.
At the top of the peak, is an airborne radar, installed in 2011.

To get to Pico do Arieiro. you can rent a car or join a sightseeing excursion. This is also part of some routes of jeep safaris.

Nearby:
Ribeiro Frio Forest Park (30min.), Monte Palace Tropical Gardens (30min.) and Monte Cable Car ( 35min.)
